The Immune System of Camels

A paper I was pleased to contribute to has been published - looking at the immune system of camelids (camels, dromedaries, llamas, alpacas, guanacos and vincuñas). The immune system of these animals is interesting, in part because it is adapted to extreme climatic conditions and camels are also an important animal reservoir for MERS-CoV (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, a potentially important zoonotic pathogen), Finally, some of their antibody molecules have a different structure to those of humans and most mammals. These can have advantages for a number of biotechnology applications.
